Emma Cowing

Award-winning journalist, writer and debut historical fiction novelist 

Emma Cowing is a journalist and author. She has written for titles including The Sunday Times, The Scotsman, The Guardian Weekend magazine and The Spectator.

Emma is a highly accomplished writer who has been recognised nationally and internationally for her writing and reporting throughout her career. Emma is a former ‘Feature Writer of the Year’ and two-time ‘Interviewer of the Year’ at the Scottish Press Awards. She holds an Ochberg Fellowship from the Dart Centre of Journalism & Trauma at Columbia Journalism School, New York, for her work covering the war in Afghanistan and its aftermath.

Emma was longlisted for the 2023 Bath Novel Award and Blue Pencil First Novel Award, and shortlisted for the 2023 Cheshire Novel Prize.

Emma’s debut historical fiction novel, The Show Woman, is set in the forgotten world of Scotland’s Edwardian fairgrounds, and focuses in particular on its powerful women. It is inspired by her own family history and will be published by Hodder in 2025 as their lead debut launch.
